Belgium: Thousands of girls threatened by FGM

A study by the Institute for Tropical Medicine estimates of around 8000 the number of women who are victims of female genital mutilation in Belgium or in danger to undergo the procedure.

Especially young girls are at risk that this will be done to them in Belgium, or during their staying in the mother's home country.

The study estimates a number of 5000 genital mutilated women between 20 and 50 years of age, living in the country.

Furthermore the study points out that these women give birth to around 600 daughters each year, which in turn are also threatened.

The Federal Ministry of Health has ordered the study.
